"Ways of Europe": A New Path for a More Inclusive and Participatory Europe

Words of Europe passes the baton to a thematic and geographical journey toward the future of Europe, embracing solidarity, participation, and rights.

4 December 2024

A dominant narrative risks defining today’s Europe: one of closure, fear, and division. As Europe faces the pressure of increasingly restrictive migration policies and the rise of far-right ideologies, Ways of Europe takes on the ambitious challenge of redefining the physical and symbolic boundaries of our continent, transforming them into opportunities for dialogue and collaboration. Through a transnational network of events, ambassadors, and cultural initiatives, this project—an evolution of Words of Europe—aims to build a more inclusive and participatory Europe.

While the first edition focused on collecting voices and testimonies, the new initiative sets an even more ambitious goal: creating spaces for collective participation to envision a fairer and more democratic Europe. Led once again by Rome-based Arci Solidarietà at the helm of an international consortium of partners, the project seeks not merely to gather diverse perspectives but to construct a shared vision for the future of the European Union. To achieve this, Ways of Europe has chosen to hold events in symbolic locations along Europe’s borders. From Lampedusa to Calais, from Budapest to Barcelona, these stops are not merely points on a map but represent central themes for the continent: solidarity, human rights, the rule of law, and inclusion.

Reversing Toxic Narratives

At a time when hostility toward migrants and minorities appears to be growing, WE 2.0 directly challenges xenophobic narratives. For example, the event in Lampedusa will spotlight solidarity through workshops involving local students, migrants, and artists, culminating in the co-creation of a manifesto documentary with schools. This initiative will amplify stories and perspectives that counter prejudice and promote an image of Europe as a place of welcome.

Beyond Borders

Borders are often seen as insurmountable barriers, but Ways of Europe seeks to transform them into meeting points. In Calais and Dunkirk, two symbolic cities tied to migration tensions, the focus will be on human rights and sustainability. Dialogues and workshops will bring together local and international communities, fostering a space to discuss innovative and inclusive solutions.

The rule of law will also take center stage, with Budapest hosting reflections on safeguarding the EU’s fundamental principles. Meanwhile, Barcelona will host an event centered on the Roma community—frequently marginalized in political participation—thanks to the involvement of Fundació Pere Closa, one of the new partners in the consortium.

The Crucial Role of Ambassadors

A key innovation of the project is the introduction of ambassadors, pivotal figures for its success. Selected from event participants, these volunteers will actively promote dialogue and participation within their communities. In the long term, this ambassador network could become a driving force for new local and transnational initiatives.

A Legacy for the Future

Ways of Europe will not end with the conclusion of its events: the project aspires to leave a lasting legacy. The manifestos, documentaries, and creative works produced will serve as tangible tools to inspire new generations and strengthen trust in European institutions. Additionally, the participatory model developed during the project can be replicated, fostering a sense of active and collective citizenship.

In a Europe that often struggles to find a shared narrative, Ways of Europe stands as a beacon of hope. Because Europe, more than its borders, is made of people—and every voice matters.
